In Memoriam Hans van Manen (1932 – 2025)
We Are Deeply Saddened by the Passing of the Legendary Dutch Choreographer Hans van Manen, One of the Most Influential Figures in Contemporary Ballet.

Hans van Manen Portrait (foto Erwin Olaf)
Known Primarily as A Pioneering Choreographer, Hans van Manen Transformed Contemporary Ballet with A Clear, Precise, and Restrained, Yet Profoundly Expressive Language. His Work Reduced Movement to Its Essentials, Revealing the Human Body as A Space of Tension, Intimacy, Vulnerability, and Strength. For over Six Decades, His Vision Changed How Dance is Seen, Felt, and Understood.
Beyond the Stage, Hans van Manen was Also an Attentive and Sensitive Photographer, with A Keen Eye for Composition and the Expressive Potential of the Body. Photography was Not Separate from His Practice as A Choreographer, but Another Way of Observing Form, Balance, and Presence. His Attention to Light, Gesture, and Framing Reflected the Same Artistic Intelligence Present in His Choreography.

Hans van Manen Maintained Deep Friendships and Artistic Affinities with Robert Mapplethorpe and Erwin Olaf. The Three Shared an Intense Interest in the Body, Formal Rigor, and A Direct Approach to Intimacy and Identity. Each in Their Own Field, They Developed Works Guided by Clarity, Elegance, and Honesty. With the Passing of Hans van Manen, These Three Great Masters Now Remain United in Memory, with Legacies that Intersect and Strengthen Each Other.
We Are Honored to Have Presented the Collaborative Work of Hans van Manen and Erwin Olaf, Dance in Close Up, at Our Gallery in 2022. In Continuation of This Presentation, We Will Pay Tribute to Hans van Manen at TEFAF Maastricht 2026.
The Entire Galerie Ron Mandos Team Regrets This Loss. Our Thoughts are With His Family, Friends, and All Those Who Were Touched by His Work. The World Has Lost A True Master of Art, but His Legacy Will Remain Present.
