Deaths in England and Wales were 30 Per Cent Higher than Expected in the First Week of January, with nearly 3.500 More Registered than Normal, Statistics show.

The Latest Data from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFOA) reveal that there were More than 7.000 Excess Deaths in the Three Weeks between December 17 and January 6.

The Deaths come at A Time when the National Health Service (NHS) is facing A Huge Treatment and Operations Backlog, Coupled with Ongoing Strikes.

Heart Attack Victims waited an Average of 90 minutes for an Ambulance Last Month, the Worst Waiting Times on Record. The Figure has More than Doubled in A Month, with Average Waits of More than Two and A Half Hours in Some Regions Compared to A Target of 18 Minutes.

The Christmas Period also saw Increases in Covid, Flu and Other Respiratory Viruses, with Record Numbers of Patients Waiting for 12 Jours in Accident & Emergency (A&E).

Figures for A&E waits are Currently the Worst on Record, with 55.000 People Forced to Wait on Trolleys for at Least 12 Hours in December after A Decision to admit them.

Cobus Daneel, the Chairman of the IFOA’s Continuous Mortality Investigation (CMI) Mortality Projections Committee, said

“Excess Mortality has been Particularly High Recently, with More than 7.000 Excess Deaths over the Three Weeks to January 6. Although Weekly Excess Mortality in the Second Half of 2022 wasn’t Nearly as High as the Peaks Earlier in the Pandemic, it was Persistent. This led to More Excess Deaths in the Second Half of 2022 than in the Second Half of Any Year since 2010.”

Figures from the CMI are More Accurate than Those from the Office for National Statistics because they take Account of the Ageing Population.

In the Final Week of December, there were 22 Per Cent more Deaths than would be Expected, while in the Previous Week there were 18 Per Cent More.

The Number of Deaths registered in the First Week of January was 3.437 Higher than if Mortality Rates had been the Same as in Week one of 2019, Equivalent to 30 Per Cent More Deaths than Expected.

The CMI said Some of the Excess was Still Linked to Covid, but also Warned there may have been “Indirect Impacts” because of Restrictions on Movement and Changes in Behaviour during the Pandemic.

Figures show that there were 31.000 Excess Deaths in 2022, of which 26.300 Occurred in the Second Half of the year. Compared to 2019, Deaths in 2022 were 4.5 Per Cent Higher than Expected.

The CMI warned that the First Week of January was Impacted by Public Holidays, when Register Offices are Closed, Meaning Some Death Registrations will have been Delayed.
