For the tragic crash of the Malaysia airlines plane ‘MH17‘, Ronald A. Westerhuis designed a place to find consolation. In his presentation for the family members of the victims, Ronald explained he sees monuments as something that overtakes you with respect for the tragedy, even if you never lived it. This is seen in the size of the monument and the ensurerance of silence because of the echos caused by the curved wall. The symbolism in the design, gently brings every aspect of mourning to bid.
Ronald Westerhuis – MH17 Monument: ‘grief with one eye to the sky’
As seen in the video, the monument is about grief, miss, memory’s, and has the beautiful message of ‘lighten grief with one eye to the sky‘. ‘It’s not essential my monument is the chosen one, it’s essential there is going to be one‘, says Ronald.

Zwolse kunstenaar Ronald A. Westerhuis krijgt opdracht MH17 monument
Zwolle – ‘Roestvrij staal’ kunstenaar Ronald A. Westerhuis uit Zwolle gaat het MH17 monument maken. Nabestaanden van de slachtoffers hebben hun voorkeur uitgesproken voor het ontwerp. Het concept kreeg in totaal 161 stemmen. De andere vier ontwerpen 61 of minder.
Herinneringsbos Schiphol
Het MH17 monument komt in het herinneringsbos Vijfhuizen. Dit bos ligt aan de westkant van de Polderbaan op Schiphol. De plek, waar vlucht MH17 op 17 juli 2014 vertrok met 298 passagiers aan boord, niemand overleefde de ramp. Ook de Zwolse Tamara Ernst verloor haar leven tijdens de vlucht.
Shanghai
Ronald A. Westerhuis (RAW) is een alom gerespecteerd kunstenaar. Ooit begonnen in de offshore heeft hij zich sinds 2000 toegelegd op enorme kunstwerken van roestvrij staal. Hij heeft een atelier aan de Willemsvaart. Maar ook één in Shanghai.
RAW heeft meerdere grote opdrachten gedaan voor onder andere Shell, Prins Albert van Monaco, de Olympische spelen en Lowlands. En hij was te zien op de World Expo Milaan 2015 en de miljonairsbeurs in Moskou. In Zwolle staat in de wijk Stadshagen het ‘Ei’, dat ook van zijn hand is.
