Believe It or Not, This is the Buyer of Maurizio Cattelan s Gold Toilet

The work s starting price was determined by its weight in gold, about $ 10 million.

  • Maurizio Cattelan s gold toilet, America, hit the Sotheby s auction block with its starting price set by its weight in gold.
  • The 18 karat piece was acquired by entertainment franchise Ripley s Believe It or Not! for $ 12.1 million.
  • America fell far short of Cattelan s auction record of $ 17.2 million, which was set by his 2001 work Him.

How much would someone pay to own A fully functioning, 220 pound, 18 karat gold toilet? At Sotheby s in New York, the answer was revealed, $ 12.1 million. That was the winning bid, with premium, that A bidder paid for Maurizio Cattelan s America (2016) sculpture. Just as stunning was who acquired the gleaming commode, believe it or not, it s Ripley s Believe It or Not!, the entertainment franchise with attractions across nine countries.

According to an announcement from Ripley s, on World Toilet Day, no less, America is now the most valuable object in its collection, which already numbers in the tens of thousands. Among its art holdings are such highlights as A massive portrait of Albert Einstein made with toast, A castle model built with 450.000 match sticks, and sculptures small enough to fit into the eye of A needle. The toilet was the company s only purchase at the Sotheby s auction.

Finding the Unbelievable is Our Business, but Even We Never Imagined We Would One Day Need A Plumber on Standby for an Art Installation,” John Corcoran, Ripley s Director of Exhibits, said in A statement. “Our Number One Idea is To Keep Things Free Flowing. Number Wwo is Making Sure Nothing Gets Clogged Up and Flushes Away Future Possibilities. We Will Unroll Some Paper and Start Planning.”

The toilet, which takes the mold of A standard Kohler, was installed in A bathroom at Sotheby s new home in the Breuer Building, originally the Whitney Museum of American Art, in advance of the sale. Visitors were allowed to look at, but not sit on, the piece, and it drew long lines. When the artwork debuted in 2016 at the Guggenheim Museum about A mile north, people were allowed to relieve themselves with it, and some waited hours for the chance. More than 100.000 visited over its year long residency.

In A fittingly playful fillip, the artwork s starting price was to be equal to its weight in 18 karat gold, about $ 9.93 million, according to the house. Auctioneer Phyllis Kao rounded up, started the bidding at $ 10 million. And that is where it stayed, selling to Cassandra Hatton, A Sotheby s Vice Chairman. With fees, the price was $ 12.1 million, A big number, but something of A disappointment given the spectacular rollout.

Kao did her best to add levity to the situation, hoping to draw out bids. “Feeling Flush?” she asked at one point. Would anyone knock Hatton “Off the Throne?”  Crickets. “Your Chances Are Circling the Drain,” she said. Nothing. And that was that.

The work is from an edition of three plus two proofs, but is one of only two to have ever been produced. It had been consigned to the auction house by the Mets owning hedge funder Steve Cohen, as Artnet s Katya Kazakina reported earlier this month. Cohen purchased it via the Marian Goodman Gallery for an undisclosed sum and later paid for to have it fabricated, perhaps bringing his total investment to around $ 5 million.

America is Maurizio Cattelan s Tour de Force,” David Galperin, head of contemporary art at Sotheby s New York, said in A statement. “Holding Both A Proverbial and Literal Mirror to the Art World, the Work Confronts the Most Uncomfortable Questions about Art, and the Belief Systems Held Sacred to the Institutions of the Market and the Museum.”

The result fell far short of Cattelan s auction record, which was set for Him (2001), A kneeling mannequin displayed with its back turned so that, when viewed from the front, it reveals itself to be A miniature Adolf Hitler. It sold for $ 17.2 million at Christie s in 2016.

The status of Cattelan as the art world s chief provocateur was reinforced last year when his banana duct taped to A wall, Comedian (2019), sold for $ 6.2 million at Sotheby s. It was bought by Justin Sun, the embattled Chinese crypto currency entrepreneur, who promptly ate it at A Hong Kong press conference. Sun has since gifted Comedian to Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road, the one time dark web marketplace, who was facing life in prison until receiving A Presidential pardon.

The edition that debuted at the Guggenheim had A turbulent life. First, the Museum offered it on loan to the first Trump Administration after turning down its request for A Vincent van Gogh painting. The White House said no. Next, it was stolen in 2019 while on show at Blenheim Palace, the Baroque estate built by the Duke of Marlborough and often seen as England s answer to Versailles. Earlier this year, two men were found guilty of stealing the work and sentenced to prison.

The gold artifact has never been found, England s Crown Prosecution Service claimed that it was likely split up and sold. Cattelan called it “One of the Most Bizarre” heists of the century. The stolen edition is considered gone forever, the Goodman Gallery said, meaning that Ripley s has the only Cattelan gold toilet in existence.

The entertainment company intends to display the latrine, while exploring plans for it to one day become A fully functional bathroom fixture. “That Decision Will Require Careful Preparation,” its announcement read, “And Someone Courageous Enough to Make Sure Everything Keeps Flowing in the Right Direction.”
