Provincie en Den Helder organiseren Europees festival voor de zeeën
De gemeente Den Helder en de provincie Noord-Holland gaan de European Maritime Day (EMD) in 2021 organiseren. Dit heeft de Europese Commissie vandaag bekend gemaakt.
De EMD is een bijeenkomst van politici, beleidsmakers, private en publieke stakeholders uit heel Europa over alles wat met de zeeën en oceanen te maken heeft. Het is ook een beurs voor bedrijven die actief zijn in, op of om de zee, ook wel de “blauwe economie” genoemd. Rond de EMD wordt bovendien een festival georganiseerd, dat de Europese burgers attent moet maken op het grote belang van de zeeën en oceanen. De EMD zal worden gehouden op en rond het complex Willemsoord, met schouwburg De Kampanje als hart van het evenement. De EMD wordt jaarlijks rond 20 mei gehouden.
Europese vlag
Het thema van de EMD 2021 wordt door de provincie en de gemeente bepaald in overleg met de Europese Commissie en het Ministerie van Infrastructuur & Milieu.
Gedeputeerde Cees Loggen: “De provincie Noord-Holland wil graag aandacht besteden aan de aanpassingen die havens moeten doen in hun dienstverlening om aan de behoeften van hun gebruikers te kunnen voldoen bij het toenemend gebruik van de zee.”
De EMD – de eerste werd in 2008 georganiseerd – trekt doorgaans zo’n 1.000 deelnemers. Dit jaar vond het evenement plaats in Poole (GB). De komende jaren is het evenement achtereenvolgens in Burgas (Bulgarije), Lissabon (Portugal), Cork (Ierland), Den Helder, Ravenna (Italië), Brest (Frankrijk) en Svendborg (Denemarken).

The Council of the European Union has announced the European Maritime Day (EMD) host cities for the period 2020-2024:
Cork, Ireland will host EMD 2020;
Den Helder, The Netherlands will host EMD 2021;
Ravenna, Italy will host EMD 2022;
Brest, France will host EMD 2023;
and Svendborg, Denmark will host EMD 2024.
This year’s event took place in Poole, United Kingdom. Burgas, Bulgaria, will host EMD 2018 and Lisbon will host EMD 2019.

The Council of the European Union has announced the European Maritime Day (EMD) host cities for the period 2020-2024:
Cork, Ireland will host EMD 2020;
Den Helder, The Netherlands will host EMD 2021;
Ravenna, Italy will host EMD 2022;
Brest, France will host EMD 2023;
and Svendborg, Denmark will host EMD 2024.
The European Commission congratulates the host cities and looks forward to close and fruitful cooperation for the successful organisation of the events.

About European Maritime Day
The European Maritime Day (EMD) is the annual meeting point for Europe’s maritime community to network, discuss, and forge joint action, in support of an integrated approach to maritime affairs. It is an inspiring, interactive and dynamic event with a strong focus on key European Commission priorities. EMD was officially created on 20 May 2008 and since then is celebrated annually across Europe on 20 May.
The main event of EMD is the European Maritime Day conference, held in a different region with a different theme each year. The EMD conference includes plenary sessions (with the participation of high level and key-experts), stakeholder workshops as well as B2B matchmaking meetings and an exhibition. It attracts regularly more than 1000 participants – policy-makers, maritime stakeholders, industry professionals and NGOs – from across the EU.
Apart from EMD conference, each year many EMD events are organised at national, regional or local level in many EU countries, covering a broad range of activities to showcase, discuss and celebrate the benefits of addressing issues and policies related to the sea and coast in an integrated way.
