Met het succesvolle nieuwe Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen als kroon op het werk gaat Sjarel Ex (1957, Terwinselen) na 18 jaar de bakens verzetten. De Raad van Toezicht van Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen stemde in met zijn verzoek om zijn lopende contract met het Rotterdamse museum te ontbinden. Ex is vanaf 2004 artistiek en zakelijk eindverantwoordelijk voor het museum, waarvan de laatste drie jaar in gedeeld leiderschap met co-bestuurder en mededirecteur Ina Klaassen. Hij positioneerde het museum gedurende anderhalf decennium dicht bij de kunstenaars en ontwerpers en ontplooide een scala aan initiatieven. Ex ziet met plezier terug op zijn Rotterdamse jaren. Hij zet zijn carrière voort als zelfstandig onderzoeker en tentoonstellingsmaker.

Het Depot: een Nieuwe Typologie

Ex verlaat het museum op het moment dat het dicht is wegens renovatie terwijl tegelijkertijd de kunstcollectie meer dan ooit toegankelijk is voor het publiek. Het nieuwe depot wordt internationaal gezien als een nieuwe museale typologie, het is het toonbeeld van de veranderende visie op collectiebeheer. Niet eerder werd toegankelijke museale opslag op deze schaal gecombineerd met een blik achter de schermen voor het brede publiek. De zichtbaarheid van de collectie is in het publiek toegankelijk depot optimaal. Dagelijks worden er mensen rondgeleid langs de rustende Rotterdamse collectie en ook de verzorging en conservering van de collectie wordt toegelicht. Jaarlijks verleent Boijmans wereldwijd honderden bruiklenen en verscheidene Boijmans-exposities toeren over de wereld.

Rotterdam is een geweldige gemeenschap vol aardige mensen en fantastische kunstenaars, en de stad wil altijd vooruit. Ik laat het museum en depot met een gerust hart achter. De verdere ontwikkeling en continuïteit is gewaarborgd in de functies van mijn mededirecteur Ina Klaassen en het management team, de verbetering van het gebouw is in handen van de gemeente Rotterdam, eigenaar en bouwheer, die zich engageerde voor de bouwsom. Ik wens de hele staf, die altijd met veel vakkennis en liefde klaar staat voor het publiek en voor de kunst, een geweldig vervolg toe.

De afgelopen achttien jaar heeft Sjarel het museum dichterbij de kunstenaar gebracht en de kunst dichter bij het publiek. Hij is op de eerste plaats een visionair met lef. Zijn eigenzinnige blik en bevlogen aanpak hebben de groei die het museum in die periode heeft doorgemaakt aangewakkerd en voortgestuwd, met het depot als kroon op zijn werk. Hiervoor zijn we hem allemaal dank verschuldigd.

Wij betreuren het vertrek van Sjarel zeer, maar respecteren zijn besluit uiteraard. Een Korte Bloemlezing

Ex initieerde Boijmans TV en de publicatie reeks Boijmans Studies en educatieve projecten als Kunst4Kids en Boijmans in de Klas. Het museum vestigde zich met de dependance Boijmans Hillevliet op Rotterdam zuid. In de Onderzeebootloods in de haven was een internationaal hedendaags kunstprogramma te zien en in coronatijd maakte hij met zijn team de “Drive Thru” tentoonstelling in de Ahoy. In alle Rotterdamse collega-musea en bij musea elders in Nederland waaronder het Rijksmuseum zijn tentoonstellingen van de collectie te zien. Reizende exposities van het museum gingen onder meer naar Japan, Nieuw-Zeeland, Zuid-Korea, in de planning zitten projecten in Mexico, de USA en Italië. Zijn idee voor een publiek toegankelijk Depot werd werkelijkheid op vijf november 2021 met de opening door Koning Willem-Alexander.

Kunsthistoricus Sjarel Ex was in zijn periode bij Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen betrokken bij ruim vierhonderd exposities, waarvan tientallen door hem zelf samengesteld. Hij verwierf met zijn team meer dan tienduizend aanwinsten (aankopen, bruiklenen en schenkingen) gespreid over de gehele verzameling van het museum. In zijn tijd verschenen talrijke museumcatalogi en andere publicaties. Bovenop de gemeentelijke subsidie genereerde het museum onder zijn leiding ruim tweehonderdvijfenveertig miljoen euro extra (voor aankopen, restauraties, publicaties, educatie, exposities, de herinrichting van het museum en de bouw van het depot). Het museum trok in binnen en buitenland veel bezoekers, met onder meer 650.000 bezoekers voor een expositie over de Toren van Babel in Japan.

With the successful new Depot as his crowning glory, Sjarel Ex (1957, Terwinselen) is setting a new course. The Supervisory Board of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has granted his request to terminate his current contract with the museum. The board deeply regrets Ex’s departure, but naturally respects his decision and expresses its great appreciation for what he has achieved for the museum.

Ex has overseen the museum’s artistic programmes and finances since 2004, a leadership role that he has shared for the last three years with co-director Ina Klaassen. For a decade and a half, he has developed close partnerships with artists and designers, and has developed a broad range of initiatives. Ex looks back on his years in Rotterdam with great fondness. He will continue his career as an independent researcher and curator.

The Depot: A New Typology

Sjarel Ex is leaving the museum while it is closed for renovation but at a time when its collection is more accessible to the public than ever before. The new Depot is internationally regarded as a new museological typology, a model of the changing vision of collections management. Never before has museum storage been accessible to the general public on this scale in combination with behind-the-scenes access. Visibility of the collection is optimised in the Depot, where each day visitors are given guided tours of the collection in storage and are shown how the collection is cared for and conserved. Each year, Boijmans loans hundreds of artworks to museums worldwide and organises exhibitions that tour the globe.

Rotterdam is a wonderful community full of great people and fantastic artists, and the city is always moving forwards. I am leaving the museum and the Depot behind with full peace of mind. Their further development and continuity are guaranteed by my co-director, Ina Klaassen. The improvements to the museum building are in the hands of the Municipality of Rotterdam – the owner and client – which has committed to the construction costs. I wish all my colleagues, who are always ready to serve the public and art with great expertise and devotion, great success in the future.

A Summary of Sjarel Ex S Achievements

Ex initiated Boijmans TV, the series of scholarly publications Boijmans Studies and educational projects such as Art4Kids and Boijmans in the Classroom. During his tenure, the museum established a satellite venue, Boijmans Hillevliet, in the south of Rotterdam. He created a programme of international art exhibitions at the Submarine Wharf in Rotterdam’s docklands, and during the coronavirus pandemic, he and his team curated a drive-thru exhibition at Ahoy Rotterdam. The museum’s collection has been shown in exhibitions in all of Rotterdam’s museums and elsewhere in the Netherlands, including the Rijksmuseum. The museum’s touring exhibitions have travelled to Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, among others, and projects are planned for Mexico, the US and Italy. Ex’s idea for a publicly accessible art storage facility became a reality on 5 November 2021 when the Depot was opened by King Willem-Alexander.

During his tenure as director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, art historian Sjarel Ex has been involved in the organisation of more than four hundred exhibitions, dozens of which he personally curated. He and his team have secured more than ten thousand acquisitions – purchases, loans and gifts – spread across every aspect of the museum’s diverse collections. During this time, the museum has published numerous exhibition catalogues and other publications. In addition to its annual municipal subsidy, the museum has generated more than 250 million euros for purchases, restorations, publications, education and exhibitions. The museum has attracted a great many visitors at home and abroad, with 650,000 visitors to an exhibition about the Tower of Babel in Japan as its greatest international success.
