In this lecture, I discuss the context within which the theory I am delineating through this course emerge: that of the cold war. What is belief? Why is it so important to people? Why will they fight to protect it? I propose that belief unites a culture’s expectations and desires with the actions of its people, and that the match between those two allows for cooperative action and maintains emotional stability. I suggest, further, that culture has a deep narrative structure, presenting the world as a forum for action, with characters representing the individual, the known, and the unknown — or the individual, culture and nature — or the individual, order and chaos.

In this lecture, I make the case that we each inhabit a story, describing where we are, where we are going, and the actions we must undertake to get from the former to the latter. These inhabited stories are predicated on an underlying value system (as we must want to be where we are going more than we value where we are). In addition, they are frames of reference, allowing us to perceive (things that move us along; things that get in our way), make most of the world irrelevant (things that have no bearing on our current frame), and determine emotional significance (positive: things that move us along; negative: things that get in our way).

In this lecture, I discuss uncertainty, or anomaly. We frame the world — or the world reveals itself to us — as a story, with a starting point, a destination, and the behavioral means to move from one to the other. The destination is valued more highly than the starting point, and constitutes the point of the story — the aim of the individual. Reality manifests itself within that story as what is relevant for forward movement, what gets in the way, and what is irrelevant and can be safely ignored. The largest category, by far, is the latter. Unfortunately, sometimes what has been happily classified as irrelevant rears up and gets in the way. That’s a manifestation of chaos. Chaos can undermine the story, or break the frame. The degree of undermining or breakage is proportional to the time and space over which the story in question extends its operations.

In this lecture, I discuss how the basic or archetypal categories we use to frame the world are represented in image, where they existed long before their nature could be articulated. These categories include the individual (hero/adversary), culture (wise king/tyrant), and nature (destruction/creation). The heroic individual (the knower) is typically masculine, as is culture (the known), while the unknown is feminine. These categories can be conceptualized, as well, as explorer, explored territory, and unexplored territory. The most abstract category is the dragon of chaos, the monster who guards what is most valuable. It is from this most primordial of categories that the other three emerge. Our existence as prey and predator is reflected in the ambivalent representation of the absolute unknown.

In this, the final Maps of Meaning lecture for 2017, I review the year and its offerings: What is a belief system? Why are people so inclined to engage in conflict to protect their belief systems?

It’s partly because our belief systems are not only systems of belief, but structures that serve to render everyone who participates in that belief and its dramatization and acting out in the world predictable, trustworthy and cooperative (even when competing).

Is there a hierarchy of rank or value among belief systems, or are they merely arbitrary?

What is the relationship between descriptions of the objective world and moral guidelines? How do you determine how to conduct yourself in the world? What should you do (and is that question even genuine — or answerable?)

What inbuilt structures do you bring into the world, as a consequence of biological evolution, that help you orient yourself in life, in the face of its overwhelming complexity? What is the relationship between the games that children learn to play when becoming socialized and the cultural structures that guide us in broader society? How is all this related to the underlying symbolic structures (religious structures) that sit at the base of our societies and belief structures?

Ik heb net opgehangen. Je stem gaat me niet verlaten. Ik heb de rest van de dag een goudklompje in mijn oor. Een telefoontje is een klankbrief. Zonder dit apparaat zouden we duizenden kilometers van elkaar verwijderd zijn, jij in Japan en ik in Bougival. Je moet weten hoe je aan een afwezigheid moet lijden, maar een snel telefoontje, zoals het slikken van een pil om angst te kalmeren, kan geen kwaad.
Je stem leek me altijd naar de hemel te stijgen. Je ziel is een geluid, een melodie. Uw woorden, op wonderbaarlijke wijze, materialiseren. Er is een rijm waar ik van hou: “Onze liefde zal de trots van kathedraaltorens hebben.” “Ik zweer het je, je kathedraal, ik zag het, het rees in de lucht, recht voor me. Je realiseert je: “Als het niet zeker is, is het nog steeds misschien. “Met zoiets denk ik dat we nog lang kunnen blijven lopen. Ik hield van de naïeve lyriek van Jacques Brel. Maar het was jouw stem die mijn fuga’s accentueerde. Ik liep als een maniak met jouw liedjes in mijn hoofd. Het was mijn rugzak en ik verzeker je dat ik geen walkman nodig had!

Eerder, aan de telefoon, vermoedde ik dat je stem trilde. Je bent vaak bang dat ze flauwvalt zoals in die verhalen waarin een grillige fee je een tijdelijk en kwetsbaar geschenk geeft. En soms is het waar dat ze er helemaal uit is, dat je niet meer kunt zingen. Je houdt op in harmonie te zijn. Wanneer u uw stem verliest, komt dit door een wazig gehoor. Je moet glimlachen: ik praat als een loodgieter. Maar het is goed als je te veel geruchten hebt, parasieten in je dat alles breekt, breekt. Toen ik vijftien was, begon ik met acteerlessen, maar ik begreep niets van wat ik las. Saai. Mijn leraar, Jean-Laurent Cochet, nam ons mee naar een specialist voor gehoorselectietests. Zijn naam was Alfred Tomatis. Hij realiseerde zich dat ik veel geluiden hoorde, veel meer dan de anderen. Door deze luisterlengte kon ik niet zenden. Mijn linkeroor was minder gevoelig dan mijn rechteroor en ik was veel te ontvankelijk voor hoge tonen. Wat was er met mij aan de hand! Met teveel geluid en furie in het buffet. Na een paar sessies was ik in staat mezelf te corrigeren met behulp van een microfoon, waardoor ik geleidelijk het spraakgebruik weer hervond! Het was toen genoeg voor mij om een tekst slechts één keer te lezen om deze onmiddellijk uit het hoofd te reciteren… Ik heb de indruk dat u niet overtuigd bent, dat u uw stemproblemen zou toeschrijven aan magische verschijnselen, riten van betovering, aan het lot. Maar je bent een femme fatale! Met je mooie eenzaamheid, je zwarte jurk, tussen rouw en nacht. Je leeft met je stem. Dit zijn koppelrelaties. Het verlaat je, dan komt het terug, het komt altijd terug. Niemand kan tussen jullie komen. Je leeft in een electieve kuisheid, teruggetrokken uit de wereld, om te voorkomen dat je stem wordt beschadigd of… of… wordt “meegesleept door de menigte” die ons bedriegt, en die ons fouilleren…etc. Je hebt de visie van een medium op wezens, voorbij oordelen, levendiger dan instinct, een soort superieure intuïtie. Je doet me denken aan een moeder, maar wel een moeder van metgezellen, degene die eten en drinken geeft aan de elitearbeider tijdens zijn rondreis door Frankrijk. Ze baart niet, ze ontvangt de reiziger.

May 24, 2020 is the 30th anniversary of Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney surviving an assassination attempt by car bombing in Oakland, CA in 1990. It’s also the 30th anniversary of the day they were arrested and labeled terrorists to the public by the FBI.

I feel a sense of guilt for how much I care about the case of Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney. There have been greater injustices and there are bigger fish to fry but their story makes my blood boil. I like to think I’m self-aware and I believe I know what I care so much about this piece of history. For starters, the car bombing happened in Oakland, which happens to also be where I live so it’s easy to relate to their story through connection of place. Despite living here off and on for over a decade and loving some of the redwood groves Darryl & Judi fought to protect for even longer, I only learned about their story in recent years. I was watching a different documentary that made quick mention of Earth First! activists being attacked by bomb in Oakland and my eyes widened and jaw dropped at what I had heard. I was shocked to learn that people had been car bombed down the street from where I live.

I then watched Who Bombed Judi Bari? and became more shocked and incensed that the victims of an assassination attempt were framed as the suspects. The blatant contradictions between the evidence and the claims of the FBI exhibited incompetence at best but with implications of something far worse. Twelve years after the bombing, a jury in a federal court sided with Bari and Cherney and found three FBI officers and three Oakland Police Department officers liable for false arrest, violating civil rights, conducting illegal searches and speaking slanderous statements. After a unanimous verdict, Juror Mary Nunn said, ‘The FBI and Oakland (police) sat up there and lied about their investigation. They messed up their investigation, and they had to lie again and again to try to cover up. I’m surprised that they seriously expected anyone would believe them.’

The story of Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney is much more than bomb survivors winning a lawsuit against the FBI. Prior to the bombing, Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney had been busy organizing Redwood Summer, a series of demonstrations in Humboldt County to protest logging of old growth redwoods. By the spring of 1990, Bari, Cherney and other Earth First! activists and lawyers had already achieved minor victories delaying clearcutting practices. Greg King, who Cherney pays homage to in our interview, identified and named the Headwaters Forest, now a national forest reserve, by trespassing onto Pacific Lumber Co. timber holdings. Starting with an illegal walk in the woods and then followed by many Earth First! blockades, protest rallies, tree sits, and lawsuits over the course of a dozen years with an eventual federal and state purchase of the land, the public can now leisurely explore the remaining 7,500 acres of the forest.

Judi Bari helped form Local 1 of the Industrial Workers of the World to unionize timber workers at the Louisiana Pacific; the same company that allowed the FBI to conduct bomb instruction classes in a clearcut a month before Bari & Cherney were attacked. In fact, as Cherney notes in our interview, on the very day the bomb instruction classes were taking place in April, 1990, Cherney, King and other Earth First! activists were arrested in Marin County for a public awareness event on the Golden Gate Bridge for the 20th anniversary of Earth Day.

In our interview, I asked Cherney if he believed his efforts to unionize timber workers, the lawsuits he filed, monkeywrenching activities or organized mass protests were the most effective way to prevent logging of old growth (you will have to listen for the answer!) because he applied all tactics available to bring public awareness and prevention to logging practices in Northern California. By the date of the bombing thirty years ago, Cherney and Bari had already been physically attacked and received many death threats but even after the bombing, both contributed to Redwood Summer and to save the Headwaters Forest – all while the person that planted the bomb remained free and uninvestigated.

Judi Bari died before the Headwaters Forest Reserve opened to the public and years before her case against the FBI went to trial. It’s been thirty years since she was bombed and no one other than she and Cherney were ever investigated for the act of domestic terrorism. It’s hard to imagine justice for Judi Bari without a legitimate investigation into the attack. Mendocino County, the City of Oakland and environmental groups now recognize May 24 as Judi Bari Day but these tributes are not justice.

The documentary Who Bombed Judi Bari? includes a TV news clip from the day after the bombing that quickly cuts from a segment about global warming to announcing Cherney and Bari as the suspects and not the victims. The news clip segue exemplifies everything wrong about our nation’s response to climate change and environmentalists: instead of labeling the victims of a violent attack as ecoterrorists, what if the public had heard Judi’s message – to say nothing of the news report on global warming? In the same thirty years since the bombing, more carbon emissions have been released than all of the previous combined years throughout civilized history. This madness is one of the reasons why this case infuriates me.

I think the thing that draws me most to this story is simply that I admire the actions of the individuals for all of their efforts to save the redwoods with the recognition that I’m too fearful to chain myself to a tree or stand in front of a logging truck. As much as I love old growth redwoods, I’m not willing to make the same sacrifices as Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney. But without people like Judi Bari, Darryl Cherney and Greg King standing up, raising banners and raising hell, we would have fewer groves of redwoods standing today.
