We are Always Dreaming, Even when we are Awake

We are constantly Dreaming, even when we are Awake. When we are Awake, the Brain is continuously bombarded with new Stimuli. Our Dreams continue to occur but are less prominent in our immediate Conscious. Dreams continue as a continual Residue of Neural Synapses still at work. When we are Asleep, our Intake of Outside Stimuli is drastically reduced and our Dreams or Subconscious come to the forefront of our Mind.

It is possible that an aspect of Schizophrenia is the Brain’s inability to sufficiently differentiate between new Stimuli and Dream Stimuli. The delusions or Hallucinations commonly associated with Schizophrenia could, in fact be the Mind perceiving its Dreams while Awake.

It is true that when a person enters into an REM Sleep State, which is when we most actively Dream, the Brain and Body undergo certain Physical Changes. There is a Suppression of the Neurotransmitters, Norepinephrine, Serotonin and Histamine, Brain Activity maintains an Alpha Wave Level or even higher and Paralysis occurs from the release of Neurotransmitters Gamma Amino Butyric Acid (GABA) and Glycine Glycine, an Amino Acid, from the Brain stem onto the Motoneurons (Neurons that conduct Impulses Outward from the Brain or Spinal Cord).

Such Physiological Changes might suggest that one is not Dreaming all the time. However, to date there has been no causal link between Dreaming and the distinct changes in the Brain, only an Associative Relationship. What has been shown however is that a stripping away of Outside Stimuli, which is what occurs when we fall Asleep, can induce the same Physiological Changes that we experience when we Dream.

In fact, several Studies over the last two years at the Departments of Neuroscience at the University of Toronto and the University of Rochester have shown that adults who undergo Stimuli Depravation and also experience Hallucinations begin to mimic the Physiology of an REM Sleep State. As with REM Sleep, these Hallucinating Patients experienced a Suppression of the Neurotransmitters, Norepinephrine, Serotonin and Histamine, Brain Activity maintained an Alpha Wave level or even higher and some Patients even experienced Paralysis, caused by the release of Neurotransmitters Gamma Amino Butyric Acid (GABA) and Glycine.

Based on the findings above, one could argue that Dreams are not switched on or off by Chemical Changes, nor do they induce Physical Changes that could only be functional for a Sleep State. Instead, it’s possible that Dreams as with these Hallucinations, were made prominent by Stimuli Depravation and that they were not so much an added feature while undergoing Depravation, but rather our ongoing stream, allowed to come to the forefront of the resting Mind.
