Straat Museum – STRAAT Session: Kroonjuwelen Revisited Discussion Panel

Produced and directed by Stunned Film, Kroonjuwelen is a movie from 2006 that documents the Dutch Graffiti scene development from 1978 to 2005 through rare video footage. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of this legendary film, we are live streaming a discussion panel with Diana Ozon, ZAP, Hugo Kaagman and Erwin Bok to talk more about where the scene came from, how it was at the time of the documentary and how it is now, 15 years later.
This session takes place in the museum and will be streamed live here on March 11th at 6 PM Dutch time. During our panel talk, we will also answer questions from the audience. So feel free to ask your questions through our social media, email or during the live streaming itself here on YouTube! After the panel talk, the full movie is going to be available with English subtitles in our YouTube channel until March 18th.

Diana Ozon
Regarded as a Dutch Graffiti pioneer, Diana Ozon is a poet who has been deeply involved in literature, Punk and Graffiti since the late 1970s. Besides performing in tThe Netherlands and abroad, she is now also a guest teacher of poetry. Ozon has developed 13 collections of poetry, two novels and two sound carriers.
ZAP
Old school Dutch Graffiti writer ZAP is known as the ‘Tram king’, because in the 1980s his name could be found on almost every single tram of Amsterdam. ZAP also had a great time around the subways of the city, not only by tagging them, but also by performing his iconic ‘train surfing’. He now owns a record store in Amsterdam called ZAP Records.
Hugo Kaagman
Renowned as the ‘Dutch Stencil King’, Hugo Kaagman started his career during Amsterdam’s Punk movement, at the dawn of the Dutch Graffiti and Street Art scenes. He created punk zines and used stencils to spray political messages. Today, his pieces are mostly painted in blue and white, evoking traditional Dutch Delftware.
Erwin Bok
As part of Stunned Film crew, Erwin Bok is one of the initiators of Kroonjuwelen and was responsible for its storyline. The idea of producing this documentary emerged after the crew attended ‘Mokum Masters’, an event that reunited ‘Old School Amsterdam Graffiti Kings’. Nowadays, Bok continues working on Stunned, by managing online campaigns, video productions and strategic concepts.

Wat Style Wars is voor de New Yorkse Graffiti, is Kroonjuwelen voor Amsterdamse straatkunstenaars. Maar waar die eerste film vooral een document is van één specifiek sleutelmoment, dat later een bloeiperiode zal blijken, is die tweede er eentje, die een veel groter tijdvak beslaat. Kroonjuwelen beslaat de periode van eind jaren 70 tot die, waarin de film zelf uitkwam. Het is daarmee een bijzonder doorwrocht en levendig beeld van de Amsterdamse Graffiti, en een belangrijk stuk Nederlandse Hiphop historie.
Het idee voor de film ontstond toen leden van het Stunned Film productieteam ‘Mokum Masters’ bezochten, een evenement, waarop vele veteranen uit de Amsterdamse Graffiti scene elkaar voor het eerst in jaren weer zagen. De filmmakers waren overtuigd, dat daar een verhaal in zat, en regen eigen interviews vast aan bergen historisch archiefmateriaal. Zo zie je Punk pioniers als de legendarische Dr Rat en ‘Stencil King’ Hugo Kaagman aan het werk. Onder invloed van de zich internationaal verspreidende Hiphop cultuur doet het Style Writing vervolgens zijn intrede, tot aan het tijdperk rondom de eeuwwisseling, waarin Graffiti niet meer uit de moderne beeldtaal weg te denken is. In Kroonjuwelen komt het uiteindelijk allemaal langs, voorzien van begeleidende beats uit de koker van Kubus en Delic.
De film verscheen in 2006 in een luxe DVD editie en werd op verschillende filmfestivals vertoond, maar was daarbuiten lang niet te zien. Tot nu, want het STRAAT Museum laat zich niet door een beetje Corona Virus tegenhouden om kennis te verspreiden. Donderdagavond 11 maart om 18:00 uur is eerst een online panel met stencilkunstenaar Hugo Kaagman, Graffiti kunstenaar ZAP, dichter Diana Ozon en filmmaker Erwin Bok live te zien op het YouTube kanaal van het Museum als onderdeel van Kroojuwelen Revisited. Zij blikken terug op de film, hun rol in het maken er van en beantwoorden vragen van het publiek. Daarna volgt meteen de film zelf, die tot 18 maart gratis online beschikbaar blijft via STRAAT.
