Jean Baudrillard stands as One of the Most Influential and Relevant Thinkers of the Later 20th Century. Best Known for his Work Simulacra and Simulation, Baudrillard’s Intellectual Career Started with The System of Objects. A Book that sought to Analyze the Newly Emerging World of Sign Value, and the Material Rupture of Early Serial Commodities. Baudrillard sought to Bring A Structural, Material Analysis with Newer Fields such as Semiotics and Social Psychoanalysis as to Give A New Lens to 20th Century Capitalism. As The System of Objects Developed from his Ph D Thesis, it serves as A Relatively Quiet, Yet Important Piece of Philosophy that Helped Shape late 20th Century Thought.

Inspired by Jean Baudrillard’s Seminal 1968 book The System of Objects, Architect and Writer Andreas Angelidakis takes A Look at the Various Collections Dakis Joannou has Put Together over the Years, and Enters the Headquarters of the DESTE Foundation in Athens with the Purpose of “Reloading” Them.

The DESTE Building takes Precedence in the Show while Being Seen from A New Perspective. The System of Objects looks at Joannou’s Collections and the Vessel within Which they are Held as A Chaotic and Misleading Path Challenging the Audience’s Perception of Art at the Same Time that Information is Offered to Them. Over the Last Decades White Walls and White Cubes have Become the Standard Typology for Art Spaces. This Exhibition is an Investigation of Alternative Spatial Experiences to Be Had within Those White Walls, Behind Them, or In Spite of Them, An Attempt to Reconfigure the Foundation as an Exhibition Device Informed by the Spirit of the Collections it Holds. A Spatial Experience Attuned to the Works in the Collection Itself.

Dark, Provocative, Sexual, and Uplifting, the Spirit of the Works guides the Visitor through A Complex Journey across the Spaces of DESTE. Unsure, and Perhaps Even Weary about What the Next Space will Hold, the Audience moves through Dark and Narrow Corridors Before Arriving at Sunlit Empty Spaces, Moving through Parts of the Building that have Not Been Seen Before, with Each Transition Initiating A Shift in Emotions.

Εμπνευσμένος από το βιβλίο του Jean Baudrillard “The System of Objects“, ο αρχιτέκτονας και συγγραφέας Ανδρέας Αγγελιδάκης εστιάζει το βλέμμα του στις ποικίλες συλλογές που δημιούργησε στο πέρασμα των χρόνων ο συλλέκτης Δάκης Ιωάννου και εισβάλλει από τις 15 Μαϊου έως τις 30 Νοεμβρίου 2013 στο Ίδρυμα ΔΕΣΤΕ με σκοπό την “επανεκκίνησή” τους. Κανένα από τα έργα της έκθεσης “The System of Objects” δεν “εκτίθεται” απλώς. Καταλαμβάνει ένα δικό του χώρο ή αποτελεί μέρος ενός διαλόγου στον οποίο συμμετέχουν ισότιμα χώρος και θεατής. Ο θεατής εισέρχεται ασυνείδητα στη διαδικασία μιας περιήγησης στις συναισθηματικές διαδρομές που αποτυπώνονται στη συλλογή, πατώντας ο ίδιος επάνω στα χνάρια αυτών των διαδρομών ως έργο καθεαυτό, διερωτώμενος τι σημαίνει αλήθεια το να βλέπει και να βιώνει κανείς την τέχνη και το ντιζάιν. Έργα σύγχρονης τέχνης και κυπριακές αρχαιότητες, αντικείμενα ριζοσπαστικού ντιζάιν από τα τέλη της δεκαετίας του ’60 και τις αρχές της επόμενης, μακέτες κτηρίων και λοιπά παράφερνα αντιμετωπίζονται ως ευρήματα ενός μανιώδους “Googlαρίσματος” με αντικείμενο τον ίδιο τον συλλέκτη. Η σχέση του θεατή με αυτά μπορεί να παραλληλιστεί με μια σειρά από χτυπήματα “Like” στο Facebook, έστω και αν πρόκειται για έργα πραγματικά και τοποθετημένα σε απόσταση αναπνοής από αυτόν. “Η έκθεση πραγματεύεται την αφήγηση, τον εκτοπισμό και την τάξη, την έκπληξη και την προσδοκία. Ο μύθος της συλλογής γίνεται εδώ η μυθολογία ενός ολόκληρου κόσμου, σφυρηλατημένου στις φλόγες μια εσωτερικής φωτιάς και μέσα από συγκεκριμένες επιλογές“, σημειώνει η επιμελήτρια

Την έκθεση συνοδεύει έκδοση που περιλαμβάνει τρισδιάστατες απεικονίσεις των διαδρομών στο εσωτερικό της, “στημένες” επάνω στις σκαναρισμένες σελίδες του ομότίτλου βιβλίου του Baudrillard.
