De Hallen Haarlem – IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Paul Citroen (1896-1983)
Hollandia, 1919
Pencil on paper
Oranjewoud, Museum Belvédère

The lavatory rarely featured as a subject in art until Dadaist Marcel Duchamp signed a urinal and transformed it into an artwork. Citroen, Pyke Koch, Gerrit van Dijk and other Dadaists followed his example.

This drawing is featured in the exhibition ‘Humour: 101 Years of Laughing at Art’, on view till 10 September.
