There are different postmodernisms. One benefit of post mod is that it acknowledged different audiences snd the impossibility and undesirability of ‘neutrality. ‘ Objectivity’ is now often seen as white male privilege reasserting itself. The value of post modernism is celebrating the diversity of ways of seeing and imagining current and former attempts to gain visibility and agency. I am thinking of films made from a gay male perspective or the hybridity of work by artists such as Barbara Kruger who also combines the tropes of advertising with the fluidity and indterminacy of visual art. But I think what is often missed in arguements about contemporary visual arts and writing is the idea of ‘committed post modernism’ where a specific audience is reached yet the work is accessible to anyone who is curious minded. Adam Curtis’s collaged films come to mind. As do the artworks of Tirzo Mirtha from Curacao, whose sculptures were seen at the Museum van Bellden Kunst in Den Haag this year. His work has a dramatic cultural specificity, (he uses lace to make crucifixes alongside the everyday semiotics of Caribbean iconography), yet the intense, exciting cultural clashes in his work reach beyond a constituency of Christian believers. There is a commitment to encouraging educational opportunitites for young people in msking and duscusding his work but this is combined with an astute questioning of all beliefs and tender or confining attachments.
