VPRO Vrije Geluiden – Jacques Brel: Last concert in the Netherlands, May 30th, 1964
Gepubliceerd op 18 jan. 2013
Jacques Brel’s last concert in the Netherlands was recorded on May 30th 1964 in a restaurant ‘Het Huis Met de Witte Pilaren’ in Bergen. These recordings were lost in the archives but in 2002 rediscovered.
Jacques Brel wasn’t pleased to perform in a restaurant while the audience was dining. However, in his performance he showed himself a true professional.
After the concert he showed his anger by throwing down his fee and yelled that the VPRO could keep the money or donate it to the Red Cross. He also received a whole cheese and left in great anger and rage. After his friend and companion Ernst van Altena said ‘Alors Jacques, bon fromage’ (instead of ‘bon voyage’) Jacques Brel calmed down.
Jacques Brel retired two years later.
