FLASH BACK: MANIFESTA 1
Manifesta 1 took place in Rotterdam in the summer of 1996. This first exhibition was much talked about in the art world and received wide coverage in the international press. It brought together 75 artists from 27 countries, selected by five curators from different parts of Europe: Rosa Martínez, Viktor Misiano, Katalin Néray, Andrew Renton and Hans-Ulrich Obrist. Twelve museums, as well as other cultural institutions and associations took part in the event, among them the Kunsthal Rotterdam, the Natural History Museum Rotterdam, the Netherlands Architectural Institute, the Chabot Museum, the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, the National Institute for Photography in the Netherlands and the Witte de With center for contemporary art.
Manifesta 1 was organised by the Foundation European Art Manifestation. Its executive office was directed by Hedwig Fijen, under the supervision of a National Committee made up of personalities from the Netherlands’ art and business worlds: Joop van Caldenborgh, Geert Dales, Chris Dercon, Marlene Dumas, Rob Scholte, Vincent Vlasblom and Herman Wessels. The International Advisary Board included Els Barents, René Block, Henry Meyric Hughes, Svenrobert Lundquist, Anda Rottenberg and Lilijana Stepancic.
