The Devil’s Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of Americas Secret Government

An explosive, headline making portrait of Allen Dulles, the man who transformed the CIA into the most powerful and secretive Colossus in Washington, from the founder of Salon.com and author of the New York Times bestseller Brothers.

America’s greatest untold story: the United States’ rise to World dominance under the guile of Allen Welsh Dulles, the longest serving director of the CIA. Drawing on revelatory new materials including newly discovered US government documents, US and EUropean Intelligence sources, the personal correspondence and journals of Allen Dulles’s wife and mistress, and exclusive interviews with the children of prominent CIA officials Talbot reveals the underside of one of America’s most powerful and influential figures.

Dulles’s decade as the director of the CIA which he used to further his public and private agendas were dark times in American politics. Calling himself the secretary of state of unfriendly countries,” Dulles saw himself as above the elected law, manipulating and subverting American presidents in the pursuit of his personal interests and those of the wealthy elite he counted as his friends and clients – colluding with Nazi controlled cartels, German War criminals, and Mafiosi in the process. Targeting foreign leaders for assassination and overthrowing nationalist governments not in line with his political aims, Dulles employed those same tactics to further his goals at home, Talbot charges, offering shocking new evidence in the assassination of President John F Kennedy.

An exposé of American power that is as disturbing as it is timely, The Devil’s Chessboard is A provocative and gripping story of the rise of the national security state—and the battle for America’s soul.

The Devil’s Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of America’s Secret Government by David Talbot combines A biography of Allen Dulles with A history of the CIA. The book culminates in the assassination of JFK and Talbot argues that the CIA and Allen Dulles were involved. I was not totally convinced but Talbot presents evidence that casts A lot of doubt on the “lone assassin” story and he identifies too many connections that cannot be dismissed as coincidence. The accusation is made more plausible by the long history of unsavory activities of the CIA that Talbot describes in the earlier parts of the book. These include spiriting Nazi’s out of Germany, some who should have been tried in Nuremburg, and using them as spies, overthrow of democratically elected governments, assassinations, and experiments in Mind Kontrol.

Both A reasonably detailed overview of Allen Dulles and his CIA until his death AND A collection of 25 30 biographical sketches of major players. Each chapter has A biographical overview of someone and then the narrative moves onto a description of the event or events that that person had A major role in.
Long, but a very good reference. Ends more or less with Allen Dulles’ death.

Talbot, the founder and former editor of Salon, Talbot gives evidence of Allen Dulles as the leader of the coup against Kennedy he tries to say that Dulles was the author of the JFK assassination.

Excellent. Talbot presents an in depth portrayal of Allen Dulles shaping the CIA to propagate his World view. The dark side of the federal government and the machinations of the Intelligence Agencies with their many intrigues, both legal and illegal, are the focal point for the book. A major theme explores the assassinations of JF Kennedy and RF Kennedy.
Most of the characters in the story are developed fully and in the round, the way A novelist would dramatize them. For readers who desire references for the evidence given, A plethora of sources are provided and such readers will spend many happy hours following their leads.

This book supplies A chronology of the beginnings of the CIA and it’s role as the secret government inside the USA. The CIA represents the Deep State, the State inside the State. Allen Dulles used his power to manage events regardless of who is the President, regardless of which political party is in power. By controlling the information and subversive activities the Deep State can cause and control major events. They can also create the public narrative to discount their culpability.
While this book is A biography of the Dulles brothers, it also describes how political subterfuge functions.

Conflict and evil versus positive outlook and concern for doing good. Amorality versus morality as an overarching theme in social and political life.
