Banden tussen KPMG en Jeffrey EpsteinJa, er zijn in directe banden tussen KPMG en Jeffrey Epstein, voor namelijk via op drachten die KPMG uit voerde in de na sleep van Epsteins mis daden en via reputatie schade door associaties met personen gelinkt aan Epstein. Deze banden zijn geen directe zakelijke of persoonlijke relaties tussen KPMG en Epstein zelf, maar wel professioneel en financieel relevant. Ik baseer dit op openbare bronnen, waar onder nieuws artikelen en officiële rapporten. Hier onder een overzicht:

(1) KPMG’s forensische review voor het International Peace Institute (IPI) In 2019, na Epsteins arrestatie en zelf moord, ontdekte het IPI, een denk tank over vrede en veiligheid d,at zijn president, Terje Rød-Larsen, donaties had ontvangen van Epstein-gerelateerde stichtingen, totaal circa $ 1 miljoen, en een persoonlijke lening van Epstein had afgesloten.
Het IPI board schakelde KPMG in voor een onafhankelijke forensische audit om deze transacties te onderzoeken. KPMG concludeerde dat

Alle donaties correct waren gerapporteerd aan de IRS.
Er geen onregelmatigheden waren, behalve een kleine maal kosten van $ 122 door Rød-Larsen in 2011.
De donaties werden uiteindelijk gedoneerd aan slacht offers van mensen handel en seksueel geweld.

Dit was een standaard op dracht voor KPMG als forensisch accountant kantoor, maar het illustreert hoe KPMG betrokken raakte bij het ‘opruimen’ van Epsteins financiële erfenis.

Het KPMG kantoor op Sint Maarten maakte deel uit van de bredere KPMG Dutch Caribbean-operaties, die zich richtten op de eilanden Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius en Saba. Het kantoor was gevestigd in Madame Estate, Van Gogh Straat 4, en telde rond 2016 – 2019 ongeveer 50 medewerkers in de hele regio, met Sint Maarten als éèn van de belangrijkste locaties, het stond op de tweede plaats qua grootte in de Dutch Caribbean. De primaire werkzaamheden omvatten

Audit en Assurance
Controle van jaarrekeningen, met name voor overheidsinstanties, banken en bedrijven. KPMG was betrokken bij bijna alle Overheid activiteiten op Curaçao en Sint Maarten, inclusief audits van financiële instellingen, zoals Fortis Bank en ENNIA, een verzekeraar waar fraudeclaims speelden (…)

Belasting en Juridische Diensten
Advies over belasting wet geving, met partner schappen zo als Meijburg & Co voor lokale en internationale fiscale structuren. Ze boden full service pakketten voor uit dagingen in de tax en legal-arena, inclusief publicaties over belasting regels voor Aruba, Curaçao en Sint Maarten.

Advisory en Consulting
Financiële advisory, corporate finance, project management en risico beheer. Voorbeelden zijn work shops over project management voor studenten, in samenwerking met USC in 2016, en advies aan publieke en private sectoren, zo als herstel na orkanen of economische reconstructie.

Forensische en Compliance Diensten
Onderzoek naar fraude en corruptie, hoe wel dit ironisch genoeg leidde tot kritiek op KPMG zelf van wege vermeende betrokkenheid bij schandalen.

In 2019 verliet het Dutch Caribbean kantoor het KPMG netwerk door strategische herstructurering, KPMG richtte zich op winst gevendere eenheden. Het opereerde tijdelijk als KDC Interim en werd overgenomen door EY, waardoor KPMG zijn aan wezigheid in de regio verloor. Voor die tijd was het kantoor actief in net werk evenementen, zo als New Year s toasts met clients uit de business community.

Er zijn ook kritieken, KPMG werd beschuldigd van belangen conflicten, zo als audits voor cliënten met politieke banden, bij voorbeeld gok industrie en banken, en betrokkenheid bij corruptie schandalen, waaro nder de boeken van Francesco Corallo, veroordeeld voor om koping, en ENNIA fraude. Lokale media en opinie stukken riepen op tot een boycot bij reconstructie projecten van wege deze reputatie.

Relatie met Jeffrey Epstein

Er is geen gedocumenteerd direct bewijs dat het KPMG kantoor op Sint Maarten audits of diensten leverde aan Jeffrey Epstein of zijn bedrijven. Epstein had echter wel connecties met Sint Maarten via zijn partner Jes Staley, of Steve Farkas in sommige bronnen, die in 2010 de Simpson Bay Marina (IGY Marinas) kocht, een strategische haven voor jachten, na bij Epsteins Little Saint James-eiland. Deze deal vond plaats ná Epsteins veroordeling in 2008 voor prostitutie met een minderjarige, en werd gefaciliteerd met mede weten van de Nederlandse Overheid (inclusief toe vlamming via de Wet BIBOB voor Integriteits Checks.
