San Diego Source – Police Arrest Suspect In 1994 Bombing That Maimed Artist
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) — Police have arrested a man suspected of planting a 1994 car bomb that blew the legs off a prominent Dutch painter.
Amsterdam police spokesman Klaas Wilting said the suspect, identified only as a man in his 30s, was arrested Tuesday and that a firearm was confiscated from his apartment.
Wilting said Wednesday the man was suspected of planting the explosive device that cost artist Rob Scholte both his legs on Nov. 24, 1994. When police failed to make headway in the case, Scholte hired a private detective.
Last September, the detective asserted Scholte was mistakenly targeted by an assassin he identified only by the initials, R.P. The detective said the intended target was a lawyer who drove the same type of BMW as Scholte and lived in the same Amsterdam neighborhood as the artist.
Dutch media said Wednesday that R.P. was the man police arrested. Wilting would not confirm that.
Scholte, who is known for his pop and surrealist works, said he is confident those responsible will be brought to justice.
