Großschalstelle Den Helder

The German army built a type 616 communications post at the corner of the Middenweg and the Boerhaavestraat, behind the post office in Den Helder’s town center. A node of the military communications network, the bunker contained a telephone-exchange as well as sleeping quarters for its crew. There was a small storage area for spare cable and other supplies. The camouflage roof was dismantled after the war. The city bought the bunker in 2003 with the intention of demolishing it to make room for a new city hall. A request that the structure was be included in a register of historic buildings was submitted at the same time. While awaiting a final decision in the matter, the bunker is being used as an exhibition hall for local history exhibits focused on the Second World War.
