Dus ging ze en ging ze en ging haar weg tot ze Cocky-locky ontmoette. ‘Waar ga je naartoe, Henny-penny?’ zegt Cocky-locky. ‘O! Ik ga de koning vertellen dat de hemel aan het vallen is,’ zegt Henny-penny. ‘Mag ik met je meegaan?’ zegt Cocky-locky. ‘Maar natuurlijk,’ zegt Henny-penny. Dus Henny-penny en Cocky-locky gingen de koning vertellen dat de hemel aan het vallen was.

Ze gingen en ze gingen en ze gingen hun weg tot ze Foxy-woxy ontmoetten en Foxy-woxy zei tegen Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey en Turkey-lurkey: ‘Waar gaan jullie naartoe, Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey en Turkey-lurkey?’ En Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey en Turkey-lurkey zeiden tegen Foxy-woxy: ‘Wij gaan de koning vertellen dat de hemel aan het vallen is.’ ‘O, maar dit is niet de weg naar de koning, Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey en Turkey-lurkey’ zegt Foxy-woxy; ‘Ik weet de juiste weg; zal ik hem jullie wijzen?’ ‘Maar natuurlijk, Foxy-woxy’ zeiden Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey en Turkey-lurkey. Dus Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey, Turkey-lurkey en Foxy-woxy gingen allemaal de koning vertellen dat de hemel aan het vallen was.
Dus ze gingen en ze gingen en ze gingen hun weg tot ze bij een nauw en duister hol kwamen. Dit nu was de deur van Foxy-woxy’s grot. Maar Foxy-woxy zei tegen Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey en Turkey-lurkey: ‘Dit is de korte weg naar het paleis van de koning: je zal er spoedig zijn wanneer jullie me volgen. Ik ga voorop en jullie komen achter me aan, Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey en Turkey-lurkey.’ ‘Maar natuurlijk, ongetwijfeld, waarom niet?’ zeiden Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey en Turkey-lurkey.
Dus Foxy-woxy ging zijn grot in en hij ging niet ver, maar draaide zich om om te wachten op Henny-penny, Cocky-locky, Ducky-daddles, Goosey-poosey en Turkey-lurkey. Dus tenslotte ging Turkey-lurkey als eerste door het donkere gat de grot in. Hij was niet ver toen ‘Floep!’ Foxy-woxy Turkey-lurkey’s kop afbeet en zijn lijf over zijn linkerschouder wierp. Toen ging Goosey-poosey naar binnen en ‘Floep!’, haar kop was eraf en Goosey-poosey werd naast Turkey-lurkey gesmeten. Toen waggelde Ducky-daddles naar beneden en ‘Floep!’ deed Foxy-woxy en Ducky-daddles’ kop was eraf en Ducky-daddles werd gesmeten naast Turkey-turkey en Goosey-poosey. Toen trippelde Cocky-locky de grot in en hij was niet ver toen ‘Hap, Floep!’ deed Fozy-woxy en Cocky-locky werd gesmeten naast Turkey-turkey, Gooseypoosey en Ducky-daddles.
Maar Foxy-woxy had twee happen gedaan naar Cocky-locky en toen de eerste beet Cocky-locky slechts verwondde, maar hem niet doodde, riep hij naar Henny-penny. Maar zij ging er vandoor en rende naar huis, dus ze vertelde nooit de koning dat de hemel aan het vallen was.
Het sprookje werd door de Engelse sprookjesverzamelaar Joseph Jacobs in 1860 in Australië opgetekend. De grap bestaat uit het vermijden van alle voornaamwoorden, wat resulteert in kaakbrekende zinnen bijna gelijk aan de beroemde “She stood at the door of the fish-sauce shop, welcoming him in.” Een parallel is te vinden bij Hallewell met de titel ‘Chicken-Licken’. Het komt ook voor in Chambers’ ‘Popular Rhymes’ met dezelfde namen van de ‘dramatis personae’ als in Jacobs’ versie. In Kennedy’s ‘Fireside Tales of Ireland’ komt het voor onder de titel ‘Het Einde van de Wereld’. Voor Europese parallellen wordt verwezen naar Crane’s ‘Italian Popular Tales’ (p. 377).
Op het internet zijn diverse versies te vinden, de meeste met een veranderd slot, dat kennelijk niet geschikt voor kinderen wordt geacht.

Volgens Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_Little) wordt het verhaal geclassificeerd als ATU 20C, dat internationale voorbeelden bevat van sprookjes die de draak steken met paranoia en massahysterie en gelinkt wordt naar de pagina ‘The End of the World’ van D.L. Ashliman (https://web.archive.org/web/20000620145435/http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/type2033.html), waar een vijftal voorbeelden zijn opgenomen, een oude uit de Indiase Jataka, een uit Tibet, een Schotse van Chambers (zie boven), een uit Noorwegen en een Afro-amerikaanse. Ashliman verwijst ook naar ATU 2033: ‘A Nut Hits the Cock’s Head’ en de haan denkt dat de wereld tot een einde komt. Hij zendt de hen om het de eend te vertellen. De eend vertelt het de gans, de gans de haas, de haas de vos, de vos de wolf. De uiteindelijke formule luidt: ‘Vos, wie zei dat?’ ‘Haas.’ ‘Haas, wie zei dat?’ ‘Gans.’ Etc. Voor vervolg zie 20C. Soms hebben de dieren rare namen, waarbij verwezen wordt naar type 2010 I A: ‘The Animals with Queer Names’: als hen (henny-penny), haan (cocky-locky), gans (goosey-poosey).
Het gaat dus in het sprookje om het uitbreken van paniek, een besmettelijke aangelegenheid, waarbij de een de ander aanstookt om uiteindelijk te belanden in de grot van de begerige vos, die korte metten met hen maakt.
