Klimaatverandering en biodiversiteitsverlies kan leiden tot de instorting van ecosystemen en massa extinctie van planten en soorten, waaronder de mens; vandaar de “extinction” in Extinction Rebellion. De beweging kenmerkt zich door het grote aantal activisten, dat bereid is tot arrestatie en gevangenschap. Concreet eisen ze openheid van regeringen over de ecologische crisis, een aanzienlijke vermindering van de netto uitstoot van broeikasgassen en het instellen van een duurzame economie. XR wil 3,5% van de bevolking mobiliseren om een “systeemverandering” te bereiken. Macht en geld zouden rechtvaardiger verdeeld moeten worden.

XR is eigenlijk een oud symbool, want X is de Griekse letter Chi, en R de Griekse letter Rho (geschreven als P), welke letters tezamen het bekende Christusmonogram Chi-Rho opleveren, zie https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christusmonogram of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chi_Rho.

De Zandloper (Frans: sablier) symboliseert de eeuwige val der tijd (Lamartine: la chute éternelle du temps), zijn onverbiddelijke verstrijken en dientengevolge zijn eindresultaat, in de menselijke cyclus, van de dood. Maar hij betekent ook een mogelijkheid van omkering van de tijd, een terugkeer naar de oorsprong.

De vorm van de zandloper met zijn dubbele compartiment toont de analogie tussen het boven, het beneden en de noodzaak, opdat het stromen van bovenaf plaatsvindt, om de zandloper om te keren.

Het lege en het volle moeten elkaar opvolgen; er is dus doorgang van het hogere naar het lagere, dat wil zeggen van het hemelse naar het aardse, en vervolgens door omkering van het aardse in het hemelse. Zo is het beeld van de keuze, mystiek en alchemisch.

De vorm van de zandloper wordt vaak gegeven aan de trommel in Azië, maar ook in Arabische landen. Ze benadert ook die van de kalebas, van de oven der Chinese alchemisten, van de berg K’ouen-louen (zie http://dictionnaire.sensagent.leparisien.fr/K’ouen-louen/fr-fr/), het centrum van de wereld (zie https://ci.nii.ac.jp/naid/110001835650/en). (…) De vernauwing in het midden is de “nauwe poort”, waardoor de uitwisselingen plaats vinden, de “pool” van de manifestatie.

Een dergelijke symbolisme is terug te vinden in de tamboer en of zandloper van Shiva, de damaru (zie bijvoorbeeld https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damaru_(trommel) of https://www.quora.com/What-does-Lord-Shiva%E2%80%99s-damru-represent): de twee delen zijn de twee omgekeerde driehoeken linga-yoni, waarvan het punt van contact de bindu (zie https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bindu_(symbol) en in combinatie met damaru https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damaru) is, oorsprong van de manifestatie. De damaru zendt de primordiale klank shabda uit (zie https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shabda).

Dezelfde vorm als de damaru heeft ook het bekende speelgoed diabolo (zie https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabolo_(voorwerp)). De betekenis van het woord is ‘duivel’ (zie http://www.etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/diabolo). Het is afkomstig van het Grieks ‘dia’ = door en ‘bolos’ worp, wat samen wordt tot ‘door elkaar werpen’, wat gebeurt met het touwtje, waarop de diabolo balanceert, maar de betekenis voor duivel is ingewikkelder als ‘lasteraar’.

De vorm van de zandloper is ook te vinden in het getal acht, wat volgens Curtiss (The Key to the Universe, 285 e.v.) het getal van Evolutie is en verbonden met de spiraalvormige beweging van cycli. Het is het getal van de onvermijdelijke en voorwaartse loop der Tijd. Het symbool ervan is de zandloper en ook de balans (dat is het teken der oneindigheid ∞). Het is ook de Gevleugelde Globe van de Egyptenaren en de Vogel des Levens van de Hindoes, die mensheid draagt van het rijk der aarde (de onderste 0 van de 8) naar de hogere gebieden (de bovenste 0 van de 8). In de muziek is de octaaf opgebouwd uit acht tonen, waarbij de laatste toon het begin is van de volgende octaaf. Volgens De Vries (1971:7) is acht (Latijn: octo) een dualisvorm en betekent dus een tweetal van vier; men heeft vermoed: de vier vingers van de hand.

En altijd zijn de Internationale Socialisten vriendelijk voor extreme, islamistische groepen als de Moslim Broederschap.
