Cor Hendriks – Als het regent en de zon schijnt (8): De duivel lacht en God weent (with English summary)
In de spreuk uit Sleeswijk-Holstein zagen we de duivel lachen bij het slaan van zijn grootmoeder (zie §4). In het Rijnland ‘grint der Düwel on Gott lat (lacht), dat e schlecht Minsch de Hemmelsreis grad mat (macht),’ of ‘Der Düwel lacht un de Engelcher krische (weinen).’ Ook wordt gezegd: ‘Den Himmel lacht a kreischt (lacht en weent).’
Dit lachen komen we ook tegen in Spanje:
‘Si con sol está lloviendo,
El diablo se anda riendo,
(Als met zon er regen is, gaat de duivel lachen)’, maar in een andere spreuk is het Onze Heer, die lacht:
‘Cuando llueve y hace sol,
se rée Nuestro Señor’
en bij ‘maanregen’ is het de Maagd Maria:
‘Cuando llueve y hace luna,
se rée la Virgen pura.
In Roemenië weent God en lacht de duivel. Maar volgens de Roemenen in Hongarije is het de Moeder Gods (‘Maica Domnului’), die weent om de misdaden der mensen, en ook de Esten menen, dat Maria (‘Maarja’) weent, zoals ook de Witrussen (‘Matatška Boskaja’ of ‘božja mater’) en de Mexicanen (‘la Virgen’).
Bij de Finnen wordt gezegd: Dan weent men in de hemel of de engelen lachen door hun tranen, maar in Riga bij Duitssprekende Letten wenen de engelen, wat ook in Litouwen wordt gezegd evenals bij de Zweedssprekende Finnen.
In de Oekraïne weent de heks, terwijl in Hongarije zo’n regen ‘the tears of the old witch’ wordt genoemd. In Zuid-Frankrijk zijn de tovenaressen in treurnis, in Estland knarsen de oude vrijsters de tanden en in Finland wenen ze in Kyöpeli, wat Kuusi vertaalt met ‘Koboldheim’, de verzamelplaats van oude vrijsters, maar volgens een andere spreuk lachen de oude vrijsters, terwijl bij de Fin-Zweden de oude vrijsters worden opgehangen.
In Denemarken wordt gezegd, dat de zonneregen de heksen pijnigt, of dat in de hel een heks brandt.
Het glimlachen wordt in Estland gezegd van de koningin, die in Polen weent, maar dat kan ook de prinses zijn, zoals bij de Wit-Russen de tsarendochter.
Bij de Fin-Zweden zijn de Godskinderen (‘gudsbarnen’) blij en de ‘trollbarnen’ wenen, omdat de grijsaard nat wordt, in een andere spreuk wenen de trolkinderen en komt de Trol doornat thuis; gezegd word: ‘Nu räinar ä tonkgåbbraine (nu regent een kabouterregen)’. In Noorwegen wenen de kinderen van Thor.

In a proverb from Schleswig-Holstein we have seen the devil laughing while beating his grandmother who is crying (§4). In the Rhineland the devil is crying and God laughs while a bad person is at that moment making his journey to heaven; or the devil laughs and the angels are crying. Also they say: ‘The heaven (sky) laughs and cries.’ The laughter can also be seen in Spain: ‘When with sun it is raining, the devil starts to laugh.’ But in another proverb it is Our Lord who is laughing, and when it rains and there is moon, the pure Virgin is laughing.
In Rumania God is crying and the devil laughs. But according to Rumanians in Hungary it is the Mother of God who is crying over all the crimes of the people, and also the Estonians are of the opinion that Mary cries, just like the White Russians and the Mexicans. The Fins say: They then cry in heaven or the angels are laughing through their tears, but German speaking Latvians in Riga say the angels are crying, which is also said in Lithuania as well as by Swedish speaking Fins. In the Ukraine the witch is crying, while in Hungary such a rain is called ‘the tears of the old witch’. In South France the women-sorcerers are sad, in Estonia the old spinsters grind their teeth and in Finland they are crying in Kyöpeli, translated by Kuusi as ‘Koboldheim’, i.e. ‘goblin country’, the gathering place of old spinsters, but according to another maxim the old spinsters are laughing, while the Fin-Swedish say the old spinsters are being hanged. In Denmark they say that the sunshower torments the witches, or that in hell a witch is burning. The smiling is in Estonia attributed to the queen, who is crying in Poland, but it can also be the princess, as with the White Russians the daughter of the Tsar. The Fin-Swedish also say that the children of God are happy and the children of the trolls cry, because the old man is getting wet, in another maxim the children of the troll are crying, and the Troll comes home soaking wet; it is said: Now rains a ‘goblin-rain’. In Norway the children of Thor are crying.
