De duivel op vrijersvoeten zien we in een spreuk uit Toskanië:
‘piòve e ffa sole,
il diavolo fa all’ amore,’
wat in Florence wordt uitgebreidt tot:
‘Quando piove e c’è sole,
il diavolo fa all’amore
colle sua dona,
spunterà le corna
(hij bedrijft de liefde met zijn vrouw, breekt daarbij de punt van zijn hoorn af).
In een andere spreuk uit Florence gaat de duivel eveneens op liefde uit, maar vervolgt de spreuk met ‘e la Madonna va per foiri’ (en de Madonna gaat over bloemen).
Dit laatste komt ook los voor in Polesine: ‘la Madona va per fiori,’ wat in Piemont wordt tot: ‘per fiur,’ en die bindt ze tot een bundel, die ze het kindje Jezus schenkt of de engelen.
In een ander Florentijns versje heet het:
‘Piove e c’è sole, (Het regent en de zon schijnt,)
la Madonna coglie un fiore, (De Madonna plukt een bloem,)
lo coglie per Gesù, (plukt hem voor Jezus,)
domani non piove più (morgen regent het niet meer).’
In Ierland zegt men: ‘The devil is riding on his rigging,’ en ook in Auvergne bedrijft de duivel de liefde of vermaakt hij zich. In Wallonië wordt hij dwaas (‘sot’).
English summary
The devil making love can be seen in a maxim from Tuscany, which is extended in Florence to: ‘When it is raining and the sun is shining the devil is making love with his wife, breaking off the tip of his horn.’ In another maxim from Florence the devil is also making love, but continues: and the Madonna is going over flowers. This last line also appears separately in Polesine, and in Piemont she binds these flowers in a bunch that she gives to the child Jesus or to the angels. In another Florentine nursery rhyme it is said: ‘It rains and the sun shines, the Madonna gathers a flower, gathers it for Jesus, tomorrow it won’t rain anymore.
In Ireland they say: ‘The devil is riding on his rigging’, and also in Auvergne the devil makes love or is having a good time. In Wallonia they say that the devil is going crazy.
