Van de vos wordt ook gezegd, dat hij de liefde bedrijft. Op Corsica wordt gezegd:
‘quando piovi e facci lu sole,
tanto a volpi facci l’amore.’
In Levanto in Ligurië heet het:
‘ciöve e lüge u su,
i gatt i fan l’amú,
(bedrijven de katten de liefde).’
Andere dieren, die de liefde bedrijven, zijn in Spanje de slakken: ‘coge el caracol (paart de slak)’, of hij komt naar buiten om te wandelen en spreekt men van ‘slakwater’ of ‘tijd van de slakken’, of ‘de slakken steken hun horens uit’ of de slak heeft iets met de maan, zoals de muilezel iets heeft met de stier.
In de Franche-Comté wordt wel gesproken van een paddenregen en in de Provence is het de tijd van de kwade geiten.
Op de Filippijnen paren de bakaw-vogels. En ook de daar gebruikte spreuk: ‘de bakulaw [grote aap] plukhaart of twist’ wordt uitgelegd als het hebben van seks. Dit geldt dan ook voor de volgende spreuk: ‘De buffels gaan met de horens op elkaar los’, terwijl in een Vietnamese spreuk de man en de vrouw met elkaar twisten en de op het veld grazende buffels elkaar met de horens stoten en in een andere de mannetjesduiven met elkaar vechten en de wijfjes hen uitkiezen.

The fox is also said to make love. On Corsica they say, ‘When it rains and the sun shines, that’s when the fox makes love,’ while in Levanto the cats make love. In Spain the snails make love, the snail is making love or comes out of its house to take a walk, and they speak there of ‘snail water’ or ‘snail time’, or ‘the snails put out their horns’, or it has something with the moon, like the mule has something with the bull. In the Franche-Comté they speak of a ‘toad rain’ and in the Provence it is the time of the angry goats. On the Philippines the bakaw birds mate. And also the maxim that is used there, i.e. ‘the bakulaw (big ape) tussles and quarrels’, may be explained as having sex. This also applies to the next maxim: ‘The buffaloes go at each other with the horns,’ while in a Vietnamese maxim the man and the wife quarrel with each other and the buffaloes grazing on the field hit each other with the horns, and in another one the male pigeons fight with each other and the female pigeons choose between them.
