Cor Hendriks – Als het regent en de zon schijnt (14): De heksen boteren (with English summary)
In Duitsland boteren de heksen. In Mecklenburg zeggen ze: ‘nu bottern de Hexen’, in Lüneburg:
Die Sonne scheint, es regent,
die Hexen buttern.
In Ierland zijn het ‘the witches making butter’, in Zweden botert het heksenvolk (‘trollfolket’), als het dondert met zon, maken (‘kärna’) de heksen (‘trollkäringarna’) hun boter (‘smör’) of als het regent met opklaringen: nu zijn de heksen buiten aan het boteren (‘ude och kärna’).
In Estland zijn het naast de heksen de tovenaars, die boter maken, achter een haag (terwijl de duivel zijn kinderen met de badkwast slaat op een steenhaag), en misschien wordt daarom gezegd, dat de boter goedkoop is op Ösel.
In Opper-Silezië ‘buttert die Hexe’, in Polen roert ze in de boter:
‘Deszczyk pada słońce świéci (Het regent, de zon schijnt),
czarownica masło kléci (de heks roert de boter).’
In de Oekraïne botert ze, in Galicië maakt ze boter en elders in Polen is het Baba Jaga, de bekende heks uit Russische sprookjes, die botert en die verzamelt, maar er kwam een duivel en weg was de boter, of ze gooide de boter, die ze gemaakt heeft, over de haag voor de zwijnen. De kinderen maken er een heel verhaal van. De heks botert, maakt boter, verzamelt boter; het zwijn kwam en gooide hem om; er kwam een hond, die smaakt het goed; een grijsaard kwam en vrat alles op.
In Spanje maakt de Oude Vrouw (= de Heks) kaas:
‘Cuando llueve y hace sol,
hace la Vieja el requesón.
Gezegd wordt bij zonneregen, dat de oude kaasvrouw (‘la vieja del requesón’) voor de dag komt, evenals dat het kaastijd (‘tempo de requeixón’) is.
English summary
In Germany the witches make butter. Also in Ireland the witches are making butter, in Sweden the ‘trollfolket’ (witch-people) make their butter, or when it rains with clearings: now the witches are outside making butter. In Estonia besides the witches the wizards are making butter, behind a hedge (while the devil beats his children with the bathing-tassel on a stone-hedge), and maybe that is the reason they say that the butter is cheap on [the isle of] Ösel.
In Upper-Silezia (German part of Poland), the witch is making butter, in Poland she is stirring the butter. In the Ukraine she makes butter as well as in some parts of Poland, while in other parts it is Baba Yaga the well-known witch of Russian fairytales, who is making butter, and collects it, but a devil came and gone was the butter. Or she threw the butter she has made over the hedge for the pigs. The children make a fancy story; the witch makes butter, collects butter; the pig came and upset it; a dog came, who fancied it; an old man came and gobbled it all up.
In Spain the old woman (the witch) makes cheese. They say that during the sun-rain the old cheese-woman appears, as well as that it is cheese-time.
