Cor Hendriks – Als het regent en de zon schijnt (12): De duivel danst (with English summary)
In Oost-Brabant dansen de duivels in de hel, terwijl in het Duitse Roydorf ‘de Düwel danzt mit sin Grotmudder’, in Finland met zijn ‘oude’. In Zweden danst ‘de Boze’ in zijn hol, als het regent en is bewolkt is, en in Alkmaar kent men het rijmpje:
‘Zonneschijn en regen
Dat’s kermis in de hel
De duivel staat te dansen
Voor het huisje van Kurèl.’
Wie die Kurèl is, zullen we nooit weten, zo weten we ook niet wie Sellmann is, die in Mecklenburg tegenkomen in de spreuk:
‘Sunnenrägen, Sünnenrägen,
Sellmann schitt in ’t Botterfatt,’
een actie die aan de kabouters en heksen en ook wel de duivel wordt toegeschreven. Overigens betekent ‘sell-mann’: de man zaliger, de overleden man.
Ook in Finland zien we iemand, Lehtola genaamd, zitten schijten, maar gewoonlijk is het een oude vrouw, de heks.

English summary
In Dutch East Brabant the devils dance in hell, while in German Roydorf the devil dances with his grandmother, in Finland with his ‘old woman’. In Sweden ‘the Evil One’ dances in his cave, when it rains and it is cloudy; and in Alkmaar (in Dutch province North Holland) they had a little rhyme: ‘Sunshine and rain, that is a fair in hell; the devil is dancing in front of the little house of Kurèl.
Whoever Kurèl is, we will never know, as we will never know who Sellmann is, whom we meet in a proverb from Mecklenburg: ‘Sun-rain, sun-rain, Sellmann shits in the butter-tub,’ an action ascribed also to goblins and witches, and also to the devil. By the way, sell-mann means ‘the late man’, the deceased man or husband. In Finland also, we see someone, Lehtola by name, shitting, but usually it is an old woman, the witch.
